Sonnet Sings: The Bard at Birdland

On Monday, November 17th, Susan will be hosting a benefit at Birdland (44th and 8th) called Sonnet Sings: The Bard. Jeff is among the list of brilliant contributing composers, and Heidi is also featured as one of the talented performers. Tickets range from $40 to $80, so if you can lay down the dough we’ll see you there!

Heidi Blickenstaff to Star as Ursula in The Little Mermaid

Heidi Blickenstaff, known for her performance in [title of show], will star as Ursula in The Little Mermaid on January 27. Originally cast as Carlotta and Ursula’s standby, Blickenstaff left the musical when [title of show] was transferred to Broadway earlier this year. She’s now booked with the show through April 5, replacing Sherie Rene Scott, who originated the role of Ursula.

Blickenstaff made her Broadway debut in 2001 as a replacement in The Full Monty. Other credits include national tours of The Who’s Tommy, Steel Pier, Jekyll & Hyde and Dreamgirls. She played herself in [title of show], which premiered at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2004 before opening at off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre and on Broadway. Her regional credits include Bat Boy: The Musical, The Girls in the Frame, Prairie and Meet John Doe, which earned her a Helen Hayes Award in 2007.

Based on Disney’s classic animated feature and the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Little Mermaid features by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman from the Disney movie (”Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and more) as well as new songs by Menken and Glenn Slater. The book is by Doug Wright. Directed by Francesca Zambello, the musical opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on January 10, 2008.

It has been confirmed that [title of show] star Heidi Blickenstaff will be replacing Sherie René Scott as ‘Ursula’ in the Disney musical THE LITTLE MERMAID on Broadway. Blickenstaff will assume the role on January 27, 2009 through April 5, 2009.

Blickenstaff was cast as the understudy for the role during the early days of THE LITTLE MERMAID, but left the show when it was announced [title of show] would be moving to Broadway.

THE LITTLE MERMAID takes place in a magical kingdom beneath the sea, where a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, the king of the sea, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the perfect voice.

Led by the award-winning director, Francesca Zambello, some of the theatre’s most innovative artists have collaborated to createTHE LITTLE MERMAID.  The score features the classic songs:  “Part of Your World,” “Kiss the Girl” and the Academy Award®-winning Best Original Song, “Under the Sea,” composed by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and his longtime collaborator, the late Howard Ashman, as well as 10 new songs by Mr. Menken and lyricist Glenn Slater.  The book for the new musical is by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning playwright Doug Wright.

Heidi Blickenstaff, who was one-quarter of the cast of the recent Broadway musical [title of show], will step into the leading role of the evil Ursula in Disney’s The Little Mermaid in 2009.

Blickenstaff, according to a Disney spokesperson, will succeed Sherie Rene Scott in the role beginning Jan. 27, 2009. She is currently scheduled to stay with the production through April 5, 2009.

The big-voiced Blickenstaff was originally cast as Carlotta and Scott’s standby in Mermaid, but left the production when [title of show] transferred to Broadway following its Off-Broadway run at the Vineyard.

Heidi Blickenstaff has been seen on Broadway in [title of show], The Little Mermaid and The Full Monty and Off-Broadway in [title of show]. Her touring credits include The Full Monty, Jekyll & Hyde, Steel Pier, The Who’s Tommy and Dreamgirls.

“In a magical kingdom beneath the sea,” according to Mermaid production notes, “a beautiful young mermaid named Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. The Little Mermaid features songs penned by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman for the Disney film (”Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” among others) as well as 11 new tunes by Menken and Glenn Slater. Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife, Grey Gardens) wrote the book.

The creative team includes Francesca Zambello (direction), Stephen Mear (choreography), George Tsypin (scenic design), Tatiana Noginova (costume design), Natasha Katz (lighting design), John Shivers (sound design), Angelina Avallone (makeup design), Sven Ortel (projection and video design) and David Brian Brown (hair design). Associate producer is Todd Lacey. Fight director is Rick Sordelet. Technical director is David Benken. Production supervisor is Clifford Schwartz.

Dance arrangements are by David Chase, music coordinator is Michael Keller, orchestrations are by Danny Troob. Music direction, incidental music and vocal arrangements are by Michael Kosarin.

Disney Theatrical Productions is under the direction of Thomas Schumacher.

Heidi’s Heading Back to The Sea! - Update

Only this time she’ll be rocking the tentacles instead of the blue unitard!

Tonight at 92Y Tribeca, Heidi announced that she will be taking over the role of Ursula when Sherie Rene Scott leaves The Little Mermaid in late January!

No set date has been announced Heidi announced today (11/6) via her Facebook that she will be performing in the role from January 27th until April 5th!

Keep your eyes peeled for more updates! There’s lots of fun [tos]sy things coming down the pipes and we’ll be sure to keep you all posted!
